The original game led to one of the most successful video game film adaptations in history, with the 2013 reboot inspiring a new blockbuster film that embodies the game’s signature survival action style. The TOMB RAIDER franchise has sold over 63 million copies worldwide. Light reflecting off the water in cavernous tombs makes scenes look like they were cut out of a nature documentary. The lighting engine has been bolstered, which helps with an expanded emphasis on underwater travel. The very beginning of my Shadow of the Tomb Raider demo showed Lara and Jonah navigating their way through a busy Mexican village at night, exemplifying the engine’s ability to make a large group of people act naturally, while NPCs had noticeable attention to detail. It’s not just character models but entire vistas that look amazing. Keep an eye out for the subtle animations, too, as they help fuel the performances by these voice actors. Key character models, including Lara Croft herself and trusty partner Jonah, have been given updates, both in stature and in visual fidelity.
